Jamaican Vegetarian Recipes

Jamaica has its fair share of vegetarian cuisine, with many followers of the Rastafarian faith eschewing meat (and other ingredients they consider impure, such as oil and salt). Ital food (derived from "vital food") is a large part of Jamaica's food culture, prescribing a natural, clean diet, free from chemicals and other substances considered to be unhealthy. Jamaican cuisine is real creole food, having been influenced over the decades by African, Spanish, Indian, British, and even Chinese settlers.

Popular local ingredients include tropical fruit, rice, vegetables, and legumes, and are often seasoned with powerful seasoning blends such as jerk and yellow curry. Popular vegetarian recipes include pilau, a dish similar to paella, and "rice and peas" - rice stewed with beans or peas and coconut.
