Shichimi Togarishi (Japanese 7-Spice Powder)
Also: Shichimi Togarashi
The traditional version of this spice mixture is made with shelled hemp seeds, which are sold in many health food stores in the West as "hemp nuts" or "hemp seed nuts". You can substitute black sesame seeds if need be, but those seeds that are rolling around on the floor of your car are the wrong kind... Use this spice to flavor soups, noodles, or stir-frys.
hemp seeds, shelled
ground red chili powder
sansho (Szechuan peppercorns)
dried mandarin orange peel
toasted, shredded nori
poppy seeds
white sesame seeds
Mix equal parts of all seven spices and grind together. Try not to grind it to a fine powder, just enough to make the tougher ingredients like the orange peel edible.
