Also: yaki tori, yaketori
In Japan, a vegetable called negi (japanese green onion) is commonly grilled with yakitori skewers. We use large spring onions, which are easier to skewer, but since the meat substitutes require less grilling time than chicken, we skewer our onions seperately due to the variance in cooking times.
1.5 lbs. soy protein nuggets or wheat gluten strips, about 2" by 2" wide
1.5 lbs. large spring onion, cut into 2" lengths
1 recipe homemade teriyaki sauce
Skewer meat substitute and onions seperately. Grill onions over hot coals for 5-6 minutes, or until cooked through, basting with the teriyaki sauce throughout. Coat soy or wheat gluten with teriyaki and grill until brown and crispy on both sides, again, basting throughout with the sauce. Serve grilled yakitori with steamed rice.
